Preventing Termites: Protecting Your Home from Costly Damage

Termites are tiny, relentlessly destructive insects that existed alongside the dinosaurs. To put that in perspective, they have survived millions of years, wreaking havoc wherever they go.

Although these pests are small, they can cause extensive damage to your home that is anything but minor. Learn more about the importance of termite prevention from the experts at USX Pest Control. Let’s start by exploring how to recognize the warning signs of an infestation and how to implement proper termite treatments to prevent these tiny terrors from inflicting damage to your property.

Understanding the Threat of Termites

Adult termites reach sizes of 1/4 to 1/2-inch in length, and the young look like tiny versions of adults. These social insects live in colonies, constantly eating a primarily wood-based diet. Known as silent destroyers, termites can eat up to 3% of their bodyweight daily, causing an estimated $5 billion in damage to American homes annually.

Here in the Northeast, the most common termite species is also, unfortunately, the most destructive. Subterranean termites are notable for their mud tubes, which are distinct looking tunnels they build for easy, protected access to food sources. Subterranean termites are also notably destructive because they continually eat wood, causing considerable structural damage over time.

Unfortunately, these termites not only do massive damage, but they can go undetected for an indeterminate amount of time. They work silently, often with no signs of infestation until they have chewed through critical structural elements, flooring, wallpaper, and other areas of your home. Left alone, termite colonies will grow quickly — swelling until they reach numbers in the thousands or even millions.

Not surprisingly, termites are widely considered one of the most destructive pests. Fortunately, you can take various steps to help keep your property safe.

Proactive Measures to Detect and Prevent Termite Damage

Although they may burrow further underground, termites are still active in winter. They can be attracted to the moisture damage left behind from winter hazards like ice dams, which cause roof damage and leaks into interior spaces. Taking year-round preventive steps can help minimize your risk of experiencing these issues.

Regular Inspections

The sooner you spot signs of termite activity, the better. That’s why routine inspections are a critical strategy in preventing widespread infestations. Unchecked, small colonies can quickly grow, and large numbers of these insects can eat a pound or more of wood every day. Prompt treatment can halt infestations and reverse damage before it becomes catastrophic.

However, for that to happen, it’s essential to spot termite activity quickly. Keep an eye on building foundations to look for bubbling paint, cracked wood, and mud tubes, which termites use to travel to food sources.

Maintain Proper Ventilation

Proper ventilation in your home can help keep your living spaces more comfortable, while also improving indoor air quality and reducing the odds of pest infestations. First, it’s an effective way to regulate temperatures and humidity levels. Additionally, it can prevent termites and other insects from being attracted to your home in the first place. Ways you can enhance ventilation include sealing cracks and openings, reducing clutter, and installing ventilation technology in attics, basements, and crawlspaces.

Eliminate Wood to Ground Contact

Preventing termites from having access to wood can help reduce the risk of the insects establishing colonies on your property and invading your home. Avoid installing any wooden structures, including stairways, fences, and decks, directly on or in the soil. Instead, elevate them using supports made of metal or concrete. If you have wooden structures that contact the ground, be sure to regularly inspect them for any signs of termite activity.

Use Termite-Resistant Building Materials

Using materials like metal and concrete aren’t your only options. The chemicals used to create pressure treated wood offer effective resistance against termites and other pests. Composite materials, which are manmade and typically include a mixture of plastic and wood fibers, also provide durability and termite deterrence. Additionally, some woods are naturally unappealing to these tiny terrors. Examples include cedar, redwood, cypress, and teak.

Remove Dead Trees and Stumps

Leaving dead and rotting wood on your property is like sending out an invitation to termites on the hunt for a new food source. Promptly remove dead wood and stumps. Additionally, keep wood mulch and landscaping away from the foundation of your home and store firewood at least 5 feet off the ground and at least 20 feet from your home.

Seal Cracks and Gaps

Termites can get in through extremely tiny openings. Seal potential entryways, including gaps and cracks in the foundation and around pipes and utility lines that run from outside to inside your home. Replace weatherstripping around doors and windows and install barriers like termite mesh screens or USX Pest’s Rodent and Wildlife Exclusion Systems. These types of permanent barriers can protect all types of wooden structures.
